Red Sangria

For Episode 6 of Crafts, Cocktails and Conversation with Carmeon Hamilton, we made a traditional Red Sangria. This festive, fruity cocktail is a must-have for any big gathering.

Fun fact about Sangria: there is no official “recipe” for it. Spaniards first introduced a version of Sangria in the 1800s, with the signature version we’re used to in the US in the 60s.

While the base is always made with dry Spanish red wine and brandy or rum, the fruit, herbs and spices that are mixed in can vary by recipe. With that being said, use the recipe that we’ve listed before to get started and then adjust your flavors to taste.

Red Sangria

Ingredients

  • 1/2 apple - cubed

  • 1/2 medium orange - sliced

  • 3-4 Tbsp organic brown sugar

  • 3/4 cup of orange juice

  • 3/4 cup of brandy

  • 750 ml bottle dry Spanish red wine*

First, prep your fruit. In addition to what we have listed, you can also add in cranberries, limes, pears and other seasonal fruit. Add chopped fruit to a large pitcher.

Pour in wine, brandy and orange juice. Mix to combine.

Add in brown sugar and adjust to taste.

Chill in fridge.

Serve with ice and garnish with an orange slice.

Voila!

Also, consider making your Sangria the night before (or at least 4 hours ahead of) your party to allow the fruit to macerate and really soak up the flavor. Sangria is one of those cocktails that gets better over time.
