My Southern Living Feature — A Backyard Built on Joy, Grief, and Growth

I’m still wrapping my head around the fact that I’m saying this… But I’m featured in Southern Living magazine!

This month’s issue (May 2025) includes a full spread on my backyard—and while I’m incredibly proud of how the space turned out, it’s the story behind it that makes this moment so meaningful.

When Marcus and I first bought this house back in 2016, the front landscaping and backyard felt untouched since the ‘70s. Crepe myrtles and hydrangeas gave the front some substance, but the back had zero razzle dazzle, a layout that lacked intention, and none of it reflected who we were or how we wanted to live.

We thought we’d tackle it together. Marcus even broke out the sledgehammer to demo a sidewalk that went nowhere. We dreamed about DIYing the space into something special. But life had other plans.

After Marcus passed, the idea of picking up where we left off felt impossible. And yet… the yard kept calling me back. Not as a design project, but as a healing one.

I realized this wasn’t about finishes or furniture. It was about reclaiming something—joy, space, memory, meaning. It was about honoring what we built together and giving myself permission to keep building something beautiful without him.

That’s the story Southern Living captured so gracefully. Yes, there are before-and-afters. Yes, there’s a full breakdown of zones, layout ideas, and styling tips. But beneath all that is a much deeper truth:

Our spaces carry our stories. And when we tend to them with love and intention, they become sanctuaries.

I hope you’ll pick up a copy or read the full feature online right here.

Thank you, Southern Living, for celebrating not just the design, but the journey. And thank you, my community, for continuing to walk with me through every chapter—grief, growth, and grace included.

Here’s to designing joy, even in the most unexpected places.

With love,

Carmeon
