Artistic Ambiance: Crafting Spaces Around Iconic Art Pieces

I’m a huge appreciator and collector of art, and as a designer, I often get asked how do I go about selecting and curating art for my home. There’s a little bit of an art to it, so I wanted to give you a mini tour of my living room and show you some of my favorite art pieces in the space and share why they landed where they are.

First up is my gallery wall. Gallery walls take on many forms. Mine is kept consistent with the frames and mattes. Everything is black and rectangular, making them easy to fit the shape of the black area of the wall, but they all have different subjects to keep it interesting.

The smaller prints up top are handwritten notes from my mom, framed in IKEA frames (that I need to replace because the finish is bubbling up off of them, lol). This is an example of taking something that’s sentimental to you and making it into unique art. The ones below them are by Monica Lewis, another artist who’s work I enjoy.

I also love to sprinkle smaller pieces of art in unexpected places like fireplace mantles, and the shelves over my wet bar.

Considering the layout of my living room, there isn’t a lot of wall space, but I have two pieces of art that I wanted to draw special attention to so their location makes all the difference. This piece by Ronnie Williams, an artist in New York, is frameless and raw (and just so happens to be Ronnie‘s initials) and I wanted it to be the piece that transitioned the loungy-ness of the living room into the bright, airy office space (don’t worry about what the office looks like right now).

My favorite piece in the space is from one of my favorite artists, Frances Berry Moreno. This abstract piece is a piece I get asked about the most often. It’s a piece you’ve never seen before, will never see anything like it, and it’s exactly why I love it and decided to hang it in my living room.

It matches absolutely nothing except for the black lines. I hung it by itself because it’s so intriguing. Everybody that looks at it has a different perspective around it/what it can mean, and I love hearing everybody’s feedback around it. It’s another story I get to tell to the next person that visits my home.

To see the tour in motion, hop over to my IG! I have some additional art pieces throughout my office and dining room spaces, but you’ll have to stay tuned for the next part of this at home art tour!
