Our VELUX No Leak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights

Hey peeps! Thank you so much for all of the love you’ve gifted me about our kitchen! I told you guys that it was exactly what our home needed and could not have turned out more perfect…but it did! Our VELUX Skylights were the icing on the cake and I’m so excited to tell you all about them!

I was already a huge fan of Velux and their products after having a Sun Tunnel installed in our main bathroom last year. It was a small addition that made such a huge impact that I was ready to blow the roof off our entire house to get more natural light in. When we prepared for the kitchen update, I knew I wanted Velux to be a part of it!

Before, our kitchen got a fair amount of natural light from a small window at the end of the galley and a larger window in the breakfast area. It’s a small kitchen and I’ve never really cared to make it bigger, but I’d always craved more natural light and a more open feeling like our vaulted living room. Skylights made for the perfect solution.

The process begins with a consultation. Our contractor, Brent, assessed our kitchen, attic and roof to ensure that a skylight was even possible. We had no obstructions in the attic and the area where it was going on the roof was a nice flat surface, so we were good to go!

The team started on the inside and made their way out. After tarping the kitchen area, they got to work marking the dimensions of the finished opening, which I wanted it as big as humanly possible! They cut out the drywall, removed all of the insulation and then cut the whole in the roof to accommodate our two new No Leak Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylights.

Not only do they let in an extraordinary amount of light, they also open and close via remote control (or VELUX Active smart phone app) to help with ventilation and air flow. And there’s zero worry about leaving them open. There’s a screen that keeps out the birds, bugs and leaves, not to mention the rain sensor that automatically closes them in the in the case of a surprise shower! I will probably never use them, because I give me all the light, but we also have remote (and app) controlled blinds that we can close if we ever want to control the amount of light that coming in. The best part about all of this is that everything is solar powered, so there’s no wiring required during or after installation!

I was looking forward to the all of the natural light that would flood in, but I was blown away by how much of an architectural difference it made to the space! My kitchen feels like it doubled in size and the feeling is glorious!

I know you may be wondering about how much a project like this costs. Product costs are pretty straight forward, but installation cost can vary by the type of installation and your location. VELUX has a page on their site that helps estimate the cost of installation, including product and labor. Just click here to check it out. If you’re wanting a bit more information, VELUX also offers virtual design consultations to tailor the information to your specific wants and needs. Just click here to schedule yours! Once you’ve got your plan in hand, you can find a certified VELUX installer in your area by clicking here.

I just want to reiterate this…

BEST. DECISION. EVER.

I have no idea how much value they add to our home, but they add soooooo much more value to my life. Happy doesn’t begin to cover it. Magical to say the least.
